MUT Academy FC on the verge of glory as they prepare for play-offs

Sihle Hlabisa

A relatively new MUT soccer team is on the threshold of greatness, just after two years of being created. On 15 June 2024, the MUT Academy Football Club will play regional play-offs. If the team wins, it will then be promoted to eThekwini zonal League.

This is after the team first won the Umlazi Division 1 in 2022/2023. The team was formed in 2022. It was promoted to Umlazi Premier Division in September 2023, where it did wonders in the 2023/2024 season. The team has won the league with 54 points, with a match to spare. MUT Academy FC won 17 matches, played three draws, and lost three matches. The team scored 58 goals; 22 of these goals were scored Siphelele “Rasta” Mngadi.  Nhlonipho “Mayambela” Nyawo scored 12 goals, while Nhlakanipho Zungu and Sizwe “Shalulile” Mabika   scored eight goals each, much to the delight of coach, Sihle Hlabisa. Hlabisa said their good performances were largely due to “the proper training sessions, organisation, and unity. Hlabisa said it was easy to win games; the players showed commitment of our players. They came to the party “no matter the circumstances we were facing”, Hlabisa said, adding that they were already preparing for the play-offs. Part of the preparation will be a match they will play in Mandeni, in the north of the KwaZulu-Natal, on 13 June 2024.

The team placed second, ND Chelsea, has 48 points, with one match remaining.
