Vice-Chancellor welcomes historic unqualified audit as a defining moment in MUT’s renewal journey
The Vice-Chancellor and Principal of Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT), Professor Rushiella Songca, has described the University’s achievement of an unqualified audit opinion as one of the most significant milestones in its history, saying it signals the beginning of a new era of institutional renewal, accountability and sustainable excellence.
The achievement represents an extraordinary turnaround for the University. Institutions emerging from a disclaimer audit opinion often require several years to rebuild governance systems, strengthen financial controls and restore confidence. For MUT to attain an unqualified audit opinion within such a relatively short period is an unprecedented accomplishment that reflects the collective resolve of an institution determined to change its trajectory.
Professor Songca, who assumed office as Interim Vice-Chancellor and Principal in March 2026, expressed both pride and humility at leading the institution during such a defining period. She said, “I am deeply humbled and immensely proud to stand alongside the Council, Executive Management, Senate, staff and students at this historic moment. While I have only been at MUT since March, this achievement belongs to every individual who believed that this University could rise again. It is a powerful reminder that institutional transformation is possible when people unite behind a shared vision, act with integrity and place the interests of the University above individual interests.”
She further stated, “Many colleagues worked long hours, sacrificed personal time and demonstrated unwavering commitment to strengthening our governance systems, financial controls and accountability mechanisms. Their dedication, professionalism and belief in the future of MUT made this achievement possible. I thank every member of staff who contributed, whether visibly or behind the scenes. This success belongs to all of us.”
Professor Songca paid tribute to the University’s governance structures, recognising the strategic leadership and oversight provided throughout the recovery process. “I wish to express my sincere appreciation to our Council, under the leadership of Chairperson Dr Mosidi Makgae, for its confidence, unwavering support and commitment to strengthening governance. Council has consistently provided strategic oversight and created an enabling environment for institutional renewal.”
She also acknowledged the critical contribution made by the University’s governance committees, saying, “The role played by the Finance and Investment Committee and the Audit and Risk Committee cannot be overstated. Their rigorous oversight, attention to detail and commitment to accountability ensured that our turnaround strategy remained focused and measurable. Their leadership has been instrumental in guiding the University towards stronger governance and financial sustainability.”
Professor Songca welcomed the congratulatory message issued by the Chairperson of Council, which described the achievement as “a defining moment in the history of the institution” and recognised it as evidence of what ethical leadership, sound governance and collective accountability can achieve.
She also echoed the sentiments expressed by the Chairpersons of the Audit and Risk Committee and the Finance and Investment Committee, who commended the collective efforts that enabled the University to move from a disclaimer to an unqualified audit opinion and reaffirmed the importance of maintaining strong governance, effective oversight and financial discipline as MUT continues its journey of transformation.
While celebrating the achievement, Professor Songca stressed that the unqualified audit is not the destination, but a foundation upon which the University will build. “An unqualified audit is far more than a financial outcome. It is a statement about who we are becoming as an institution. It reflects stronger governance, greater accountability, improved systems and renewed confidence in the way we manage the University’s resources. Most importantly, it gives our students, staff, government, industry partners, donors and society renewed confidence that MUT is building an institution worthy of their trust.”
She said the milestone directly supports the University’s IGNITE 2030 Strategy, which seeks to position MUT as a leading university of technology recognised for academic excellence, impactful research, innovation, stakeholder confidence and sustainable development.
Professor Songca concluded by reminding the University community that sustained excellence will require continued discipline and shared responsibility. “Today we celebrate, but tomorrow we continue the work. We have demonstrated that transformation is possible. Our responsibility now is to protect this achievement, build on it and ensure that future generations inherit an institution that is stronger, more accountable and globally respected. This marks the beginning of MUT’s next chapter, from recovery to resilience, from resilience to excellence, and from excellence to lasting impact.”
As MUT celebrates this landmark achievement, the University reaffirms its commitment to strengthening governance, advancing academic excellence, promoting innovation and creating lasting value for its students, staff, partners and the broader South African society.
