A powerful declaration, “Today we are here to change lives,” set the tone for the second MUT annual Open Day held on 29 April 2026 at the Umlazi Cinema. Sthembile Maphumulo-Ndlovu, Schools’ Liaison Officer at the Department of Marketing and Communications, made an impactful statement to hundreds of learners from Umlazi Township high schools, emphasising the event’s profound purpose. Maphumulo-Ndlovu elaborated on the rationale behind the Open Day, explaining that it serves to inform learners about the University’s diverse academic offerings and various student activities. This crucial information equips learners and their teachers with the knowledge needed to make well-informed decisions regarding their future academic paths.

The event focused on guiding students towards higher education, with Maphumulo-Ndlovu urging the learners to pay close attention to the professionals who would detail the subject requirements for post-Grade 12 studies. An exceptional communicator with the learners, Maphumulo-Ndlovu stressed the importance of aiming for top marks. “Do yourself a favour; start working hard. If you do not practice your Maths, your Physics, you will pay the price,” she cautioned, referencing the competitive nature of university admissions where academic staff prioritise high-achieving students.

Maphumulo-Ndlovu also encouraged the learners to thoroughly explore the various stands set up by the University to delve deeper into the available programmes at MUT. The Open Day saw participation from commercial and science learners representing numerous local schools, including Naleni High School, Menzi High School, Qhilika High School, Zwelibanzi High School, Shumayela High School, Zwelethu High School, Umlazi Senior Secondary, Makhumbuza High School, King Shaka High School, and Mbelebele High School.
