Standing together against substance abuse: MUT and SANCA Champion Student Well-being

Dr Naidoo

Every year on 26 June, the world commemorates the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, a United Nations observance dedicated to raising awareness about the devastating impact of substance abuse while promoting prevention, treatment, recovery, and collective action. The day serves as a reminder that addressing drug abuse is not solely a law enforcement responsibility; it requires communities, families, educational institutions, healthcare providers, and individuals to work together in creating environments where people can thrive.

At MUT, student well-being remains at the heart of the University’s commitment to student success. Through the Student Affairs Division, and particularly the Student Counselling Unit, led by Dr Paulette Naidoo, the University continues to strengthen support systems that empower students to make healthy life choices and seek help when they need it most.

As part of SANCA Drug Awareness Week (22–27 June), MUT has partnered with the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (SANCA), one of South Africa’s leading non-profit organisations dedicated to the prevention and treatment of alcohol, drug and other substance use disorders. SANCA works with schools, universities, communities and families to provide education, counselling, rehabilitation and prevention programmes that reduce the harmful effects of substance abuse.

Dr Naidoo said, “The partnership reinforces a shared commitment to creating a safe, supportive and stigma-free campus where students can access professional help without fear of judgment. The awareness campaign encourages students to recognise the early warning signs of substance misuse, understand that addiction is a medical condition rather than a moral failing, and appreciate the importance of seeking assistance early.”

Dr Naidoo added that “The campaign also highlights the range of support services available to students through the Student Counselling Unit, including confidential counselling, emergency psychological support and referrals to specialist services where necessary. By working alongside SANCA, MUT is strengthening its holistic approach to student development, one that recognises that academic success is closely linked to mental health, resilience and overall well-being.

Through education, compassion and accessible support services, MUT continues to foster a campus culture where students are empowered to choose healthy lifestyles, build resilience and realise their full potential. Dr Naidoo’s plea to academics is that they should convey this message to their students: “Step into a brighter future, choose life, not drugs.”
