Highlighting the vital link between employee well-being and workplace productivity, MUT hosted its annual Wellness Day on 22 October 2026. The campus event brought together 251 staff members who paused their daily routines to prioritise their personal health, access professional services, and engage in physical fitness activities.
Staff from both support and academic departments took part in the event.
The event brought various service providers directly to the staff, offering personalised consultations and routine health checkups in a single, accessible location
Some of these departments were the Clinic, Finance, Protection Services, Human Resources and Development, Student Affairs, DIPR, Marketing and Communications, Marketing, Staff members did their body check, and also some physical activities. Among the active participants were Phelelani Khomo, from the Department of Biomedical Sciences, and was Nozipho Mazibuko, Secretary of the Department of Sport and Recreation at MUT. Khomo said his participation in the event was part of his preparation for his 12th Comrades Marathon. For Mazibuko, the day offered a meaningful shift from her usual administrative duties, allowing her to take full advantage of the diverse health services and consultations available on site.
Mazibuko explains her experience of the day. “Attending the MUT Wellness Day was a great success for me,” Mazibuko shared. “I had the opportunity to visit different stations in one location and receive valuable information directly from service providers through one-on-one consultations. Sometimes, service providers invite us to attend presentations, but due to our busy schedules, we may not have time to attend. Having all these services available in one place was very helpful and convenient,” said Mazibuko.
Leveraging her background in sport and recreation, Mazibuko participated in the live aerobics sessions offered during the day and used the platform to advocate for ongoing staff fitness initiatives. “I had the opportunity to participate in aerobics and recruit more staff members to join the programme,” Mazibuko noted, pointing out that aerobics classes are offered free of charge to all MUT employees, a benefit that many remain unaware of. A standout moment of the event for Mazibuko was fulfilling her long-standing personal goal: donating blood. “I have been longing to donate blood for a long time, and I am happy that I finally had the opportunity to do so,” she said.
MUT’s Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE) Officer, Lizwi Masondo welcomed the turnout. With strong participation numbers and positive feedback across departments, MUT’s Wellness Day reinforced the University’s commitment to fostering a healthy, energised, and supportive work environment.
