Resumption of SRC Elections
The Voting Day for the SRC Elections which was scheduled for 17 September 2026, had to be postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. Amongst others, contesting students and student organisations raised concerns regarding the lack of numbering of the ballot papers. All the concerns that have been raised and addressed to the IEC’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) and Management, have now been resolved and formally responded to.
Following extensive consultation with various stakeholders, I am happy to report the resumption of the SRC Elections and that Thursday, 01 October has been designated as the voting day. This date has been approved by the University’s Executive Management Committee (EMC), endorsed by the Student Affairs Committee (SAC) of Council, and agreed to by the SRC Elections Liaison Committee (ELC). The IEC has given assurances that all matters of concern that precipitated the postponement have been addressed and that measures are in place to ensure that there is no recurrence.
Following the SRC Elections Liaison Committee meeting of 24 September 2026, the CEO has reported that all represented student formations have endorsed the ballot paper to be used on Voting Day, whose design includes security measures.
As per the request of the students, academic assessments that were scheduled to take place on 01 October 2026 have now been postponed. No programme or gathering has been approved by MUT Management or any authorized official and therefore, NO Programme or Gathering will simultaneously take place on 01 October 2026.
Students are encouraged to participate and make their mark in this important exercise of democratic rights. A reminder that, as per article 3.9.14.6 and 3.9.14.8 of the Electoral Policy SOP:
3.9.14.6 No student (including any candidate) may unnecessarily remain in the vicinity of the voting station after voting or at any time interfere with the voting tasks of the election officers or influence or intimidate any student.
3.9.13.8 If misbehaviour is deemed to be adequately serious, the Chief Electoral Officer may
inform the university management about the conduct of the student together with a
recommendation that further disciplinary steps be taken against the student.
Wishing all the candidates everything of the best.
Yours sincerely,
Prof S. Chalufu
Interim Dean of Students
