Nelson Mandela believed that education is the most powerful weapon with which to change the world. At Mangosuthu University of Technology, that belief continues to inspire a new generation of researchers whose work is improving lives through innovation, scientific discovery and community-centred solutions.
As South Africa commemorates Mandela Month, MUT celebrates not only the life of a global icon but also the people who continue his legacy every day. Through the University’s IGNITE 2030 Strategy, research is becoming a powerful instrument for social justice, economic development and sustainable communities.
This commitment comes to life through the launch of the Vice-Chancellor’s Research Vlog Series, where Professor Rushiella Songca sits down with some of MUT’s leading researchers to explore how their work is tackling society’s most pressing challenges, from artificial intelligence in healthcare and climate resilience to indigenous knowledge systems, biotechnology, food security and sustainable energy. The launch of the VLOG series will take place at the Theatre (revamped DH).
In many ways, these researchers embody Mandela’s enduring call for leadership through service. Their work reflects a shared commitment to using knowledge not simply to advance scholarship, but to uplift communities and contribute meaningfully to South Africa, the African continent and the world.
As MUT continues to implement IGNITE 2030, Mandela’s legacy remains a guiding light, reminding us that the true purpose of education is not only to expand knowledge but to transform lives.
