The high school football final delivered the most dramatic moment of the 2026 MUT Schools and Community Cup, as Umlazi High School beat Skhwama High School 4–2 in a penalty shootout after a deadlocked match. Zwelihle High School finished third.
Umlazi High School team manager Mduduzi Mbanjwa credited a careful selection process and structured preparation for the win. “I prepared the Umlazi High School team by organising class matches and selecting the top 50 players. Then I invited local coach Mthokozisi Zondi to assist in narrowing down the final 18-player squad for the MUT tournament,” he said.
Training balanced physical conditioning with mental strength. “We organised regular midweek training sessions where we worked on fitness, skills, ball control, communication, and game understanding. We also focused heavily on discipline, confidence, and maintaining a positive attitude, encouraging players to support one another, respect opponents, and remain focused under pressure,” said Mbanjwa.
For Mbanjwa, the tournament was about more than silverware. “We told our players that the MUT Schools and Community Cup is an opportunity to learn, gain experience, and represent their school with pride.”
In primary school football, Zandile Primary School were crowned champions after beating Imisebe Primary School in the final, with Ngilosi Primary School in third place.
Netball: Sandakahle Primary School won the primary school title after a hard-fought victory over Ndongeni Primary School, with Zwelesithembiso Primary School in third. In the high school division, Umlazi Comtech’s teamwork earned them the championship, ahead of runners-up Igagasi High School and third-placed Umlazi High School.
Chess: Sithandiwe Primary School from BB Section topped the primary school standings with 12 points, followed by Imisebe Primary School on 11 and Zwelesithembiso Primary School on 10. Shumayela High School were crowned high school champions, with Enaleni High School second and Ekwazini High School third.
