New mid-year students embark on “significant rite of passage” at MUT orientation

On 17 July 2026, Mangosuthu University of Technology welcomed its latest cohort of mid-year students with a transformative orientation ceremony at the Student Centre, marking what University leaders describe as a vital turning point in the students’ lives. The event, which primarily hosted students newly enrolled in the Faculty of Engineering, served as a comprehensive introduction to the University’s academic, administrative, and social frameworks.

Dr Paulette Naidoo, Director of Student Counselling, described the orientation as a “significant rite of passage.” For many first-time entering (FTE) students, this event represents their first formal introduction to MUT’s Executive Management, student leadership, academic staff, and support structures.

Highlighting the psychological shift that comes with entering higher education, Dr Naidoo emphasised the necessity of structured guidance. “Research shows that the first year at university is a crucial period of transition for students, offering both opportunities and challenges which require successful navigation. First-year students also come with different expectations, perceptions, fears and assumptions about University life – all of which can be overwhelming and detrimental to their academic, psychological and psychosocial functioning if they are not provided with accurate information and holistic support.”

To address these challenges, the Student Counselling Unit, operating under the Student Affairs Department, coordinated a holistic programme designed to meet the academic, developmental, and psycho-social needs of incoming students, equipping them with tools to succeed well beyond their time at MUT.

The orientation brought together representatives from across all student-facing divisions of the University. High-profile speakers and key administrative figures shared crucial advice to help the new cohort navigate their academic journeys. These were Professor Mncedisi Maphalala, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research, Innovation and Engagement (RIE), representing interim Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Rushiella Songca; Dr Paulette Naidoo, Director of Student Counselling, Representing interim Dean of Students, Professor Sibusiso Chalufu; Dr. Richard Chidzonga, Dean: Faculty of Engineering; Zolisa Gqamane, Deputy Registrar: Academic Administration; and Lizwi Masondo, Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE) Officer with the support of MUT’s leadership and dedicated counseling services, the newly registered engineering and academic students are now poised to begin their semester with the clarity, resources, and institutional support needed to thrive.
