In a bold move to amplify the “student voice,” the Quality Management Directorate (QMD) has officially launched its first-ever student advocacy survey. The initiative, designed to strengthen student feedback mechanisms, specifically targets module surveys to ensure continuous improvement in teaching and learning at MUT. The campaign kicked off with a high-energy roadshow at the Main Campus on 12 May 2026, and moved to the North Campus the following day, marking a turning point in how the University engages with its student body on academic quality.
At the heart of this campaign is a new, robust, and innovative system for conducting module surveys. Dr Phiwayinkosi Gumede, QMD Director, said that this technological leap was born from a strategic partnership between the QMD and the Information Technology and Networks (IT&N) department, which began in November 2025. The collaboration successfully delivered a “fit-for-purpose” system well ahead of the end-of-May 2026 deadline. QMD officials expressed their sincere gratitude to Nkosana Jijimba, whose instrumental role and technical expertise were vital in bringing this innovation to life.
Recognising that students often respond best to their own peers, the QMD recruited and trained 10 Quality Assurance Ambassadors. These student leaders are trained in the nuances of quality matters and serve as a bridge between the student population and the directorate. According to Dr Gumede, these ambassadors played a key role in the success of the 2026 Student Feedback Roadshow. He added that they will continue to promote student engagement in surveys, strengthen communication channels between students and university leadership, and advocate for a culture in which student feedback directly informs the academic and living environments.
The QMD views student feedback as a central pillar of the University’s growth. By modernising the survey process and deploying peer ambassadors, the directorate aims to create a sustainable culture where students feel their input is both valued and impactful. Following the resounding success of the roadshow, the QMD team stated they look forward to building on this momentum, ensuring that the student voice remains a driving force for transformation and excellence across all MUT campuses.
