
The Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) has announced the appointment of Professor Mncedisi Maphalala as its new Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research, Innovation and Engagement (DVC: RIE). An established scholar and academic leader, Professor Maphalala brings nearly three decades of educational experience to the Institution, poised to steer the University’s research and innovation strategies into a new era. Speaking on his appointment, Professor Maphalala expressed a deep commitment to the transformative power of higher education. He noted that his decision to join MUT was driven by the Institution’s unique position in KwaZulu-Natal and the broader South African landscape.
“I responded to MUT’s call because I strongly believe in the strategic potential of Universities of Technology to drive socially responsive research, innovation, entrepreneurship, and community transformation,” Professor Maphalala stated. He highlighted the University’s strong links with industry and local communities, as well as its historical mission of access and empowerment, as key factors that attracted him to the role.
Professor Maphalala’s primary goal is to contribute to building a “research-active, innovation-driven, and community-anchored university” capable of addressing critical societal challenges while advancing African scholarship on the global stage. His leadership philosophy and strategic plans are deeply intertwined with the University’s overarching blueprint, MUT Vision 2030: Ignite 2030. His agenda will focus heavily on institutional transformation, innovation, sustainability, societal relevance, and academic excellence.
Professor Maphalala arrives at MUT with a formidable academic portfolio. As a National Research Foundation (NRF) C2-rated researcher, he is highly regarded for his sustained contributions to knowledge production and research excellence. His scholarly output is extensive, featuring over 80 accredited research articles, 40 book chapters, eight edited books, and four edited journal issues. His diverse research interests cover cutting-edge and foundational topics alike, including artificial intelligence in education, curriculum studies, self-directed learning, and teacher development.
Beyond his own research, Professor Maphalala has demonstrated a profound commitment to developing the next generation of scholars, having supervised over 30 Master’s and Doctoral students. The new DVC: RIE boasts a distinguished career spanning 31 years in the education sector, 10 years in Basic Education and 21 years in Higher Education.
Prior to joining MUT, he served as a Full Professor at the University of South Africa (UNISA). His vast leadership journey features a wealth of experience across several of South Africa’s premier academic institutions. He has previously held the roles of Director of the Centre for Excellence in Learning & Teaching (CELT) at the Durban University of Technology (DUT), Research Professor at North-West University (NWU), Dean of the Faculty of Education at the University of Zululand (UNIZULU), and Institutional Researcher at the University of the Witwatersrand.
Throughout his career, Prof. Maphalala has made significant strides in building robust research cultures within universities. He has been instrumental in strengthening postgraduate success and increasing research outputs through innovative initiatives, such as research writing retreats, collaborative publishing models, international exchange programs, and structured supervision support.
