Professor Rushiella Songca

MUT Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Rushiella Songca, officially inaugurated the 2026/2027 Student Representative Council (SRC) during a formal ceremony held at the Student Centre on Monday evening, 12 October 2026. Addressing executive management, members of the University Council, university leadership, staff, and students, Professor Songca described the inauguration as a “sacred transition” celebrating the living democracy of the student body.

In her keynote address, Professor Songca commended the outgoing student leadership for their passion and contribution to institutional stability, while challenging the incoming student leaders to embrace service over entitlement. “Leadership at MUT is not a crown; it is a cross. It is not about entitlement; it is about service. It is not about confrontation; it is about co-creation,” said Prof Songca. “The challenges our students face requires a new breed of leadership, agile, empathetic, and deeply strategic.”

At the core of the Vice-Chancellor and Principal’s address was the University’s transformative roadmap: the IGNITE 2030 Strategy. Professor Songca urged the new SRC to serve as the “engine” connecting student governance to the institutional vision across its five key goals, which are ‘future-fit learning and teaching: financial sustainability; research, innovation, and digital transformation; Strategic partnerships, internationalisation and visibility; and engaging, inclusive, and supportive environment.

Professor Songca emphasised that achieving IGNITE 2030 requires embedding MUT’s core values, which are encapsulated in the acronym MY MUT, into daily leadership practice. Concluding her address, the Vice-Chancellor and Principal set out three non-negotiable expectations for the incoming student leadership: integrity and accountability, prioritising constructive partnership over adversarial confrontation, and maintaining academic primacy by leading as both distinguished scholars and capable student advocates.  Professor Songca officially declared the 2026/2027 SRC inaugurated, reiterating MUT Management’s commitment to open dialogue and collaborative engagement as MUT moves forward into 2030 and beyond.
