FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MUT to host second annual indigenous Food Market Day to drive food system transformation
Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) is proud to announce the second edition of its highly anticipated Indigenous Food Market Day. The event will take place on Thursday, 16 July 2026, at the MUT Main Campus under the powerful theme: “Accelerating Food System Transformation in South Africa through Indigenous Food Promotion.”
This landmark initiative serves as a dynamic platform to celebrate and promote indigenous foods as a viable pathway toward sustainable food systems, enhanced nutritional security, local entrepreneurship, and climate change resilience.
The Indigenous Food Market Day is more than just a market; it is a collaborative ecosystem. This year’s event will bring together a diverse group of stakeholders, including local farmers and community vendors, who will showcase resilient, locally grown indigenous produce; students and academics, who will highlight cutting-edge research and innovation in indigenous knowledge systems (IKS); and government departments and industry partners, who will share their knowledge on policy, market access, and the commercialization of indigenous crops.
“By championing indigenous foods, we are not only preserving our rich cultural heritage but also uncovering sustainable solutions to modern challenges like food insecurity and climate change,” said Professor Xolile Mkhize, the organiser of the event, and a Lecturer in the Department of Agricultural Extension and Sustainable Food Systems, formerly the Department of Community Extension.
