In a continued effort to uplift the local community and empower the next generation of professionals, Mangosuthu University of Technology opened its doors to grade 12 computer application technology (CAT) learners from Embizweni High School on Tuesday, 13 October 2026. The University gave the school access to its C13 computer laboratory, bridging a critical resource gap for the Umlazi Township school, whose matric learners had to write their final basic education examination at MUT.
According to Embizweni High School CAT teacher Sandile Gumede, the school lacks sufficient computer equipment to accommodate all its students for practical work. “We are very appreciative of the MUT help,” said Gumede, expressing his gratitude to the Institution for opening its facilities to his 20 Grade 12 learners.
The engagement and visit were coordinated by the staff of MUT’s Department of Marketing and Communications, underscoring the University’s ongoing commitment to community development and educational support within Umlazi. Ayanda Bulose, Schools Liaison Officer at the department, said the school approached them through Phelelani Khomo of the Department of Biomedical Sciences. The department expressed appreciation to the Head of Chemical Engineering, Dr Julia Baah, her lab colleagues, and the Department of Information Technology and Networks, who enabled this partnership and helped ensure a stress-free examination for the learners.
Through initiatives like this, MUT continues to make a meaningful impact by equipping local youth with the practical tools and environment needed to succeed in their academic and future professional endeavours.
