Through the Student Counselling Unit, MUT has expressed its deep concern regarding the recent spate of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) attacks against women in Gauteng. Dr Paulette Naidoo, Director of the Student Counselling Unit, along with staff and students, participated in a demonstration of support to honour the grieving families and communities impacted by these tragic losses.
Addressing the psychological toll of these events, Dr Naidoo cautioned that while staying informed about current affairs and security issues is important, constant, unfiltered exposure to GBV content on social media can be severely distressing and anxiety-provoking. Dr Naidoo advised social media users to limit their screen time and pay close attention to trigger warnings attached to potentially distressing images, videos, and text.
To support those affected, Dr Naidoo urges the University community to utilise professional mental health resources. Students can access walk-in support at the Student Counselling Unit on Level -1, Student Centre. Alternatively, contact the unit via email at studentcounselling@mut.ac.za or phone at 031 907 7186. For staff, professional support can be accessed through the University’s Employee Wellness service provider via Human Resources & Development (HR & D). Additionally, 24/7 support is available from these national support resources: South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG): 0800 567 567; and Higher Health 24/7 Helpline: 0800 36 36 36 | SMS: 43336.
