As usual, the University is participating in the annual USSA Winter Games at various venues across the country. The unit’s Head, Siyabulela Mkwalo, said the MUT Sport and Recreation Unit has given the relevant details. The participating sporting codes and competition venues are that the 10-member Karate team will leave for the University of the Western Cape, where they will take on their opponents from 27–28 June 2026. The 14-member Bodybuilding team will depart for Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University and contest on 28 June 2026. The Dance team, with 15 members, is going to the University of the Free State and will compete from 28 June to 2 July 2026. Lastly, the Netball team, the largest with 20 members, will square up against their opponents at Central University of Technology from 29 June to 3 July 2026.
The selection of participating sporting codes is traditionally guided by a standardised framework that considers team performances at local, regional, and national competitions over the current and previous year.
Mkwalo said that the University emphasised that participation in the USSA Winter Competition serves several important objectives. These include providing student-athletes with a platform to showcase their talent at the national level, creating opportunities for elite athletes to be identified for potential national team selection, and achieving strong performances that enhance the Institution’s reputation and visibility.
All the teams will attend a sending-off party on 19 June 2026, where they will receive their marching orders.
