On 7 May 2026, in a remarkable demonstration of community-centred higher education, Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT), through its Marketing and Communications Department, brought the University experience directly to the people of Dannhauser during a large-scale Open Day hosted in partnership with the local municipality.

Travelling all the way from Durban, the MUT delegation effectively “took the University to the town,” ensuring that learners from rural and surrounding communities could access first-hand information about higher education opportunities without the burden of long-distance travel. The initiative reinforced MUT’s commitment to widening access to higher education and empowering communities through knowledge.

The significance of the occasion was reflected in the calibre of leadership in attendance. The event attracted the full support of the municipality’s leadership, including His Worship the Mayor, Councillor Bongani Alpheus Radebe, the Deputy Mayor, the Speaker, the Municipal Manager, and other senior municipal officials. Their presence underscored the collective recognition that education remains central to local development and youth empowerment.

Equally notable was the strong participation from government stakeholders. The Department of Education was represented at senior levels, underscoring the strategic importance of creating pathways from secondary education to higher education. The Department of Health also participated, demonstrating a united government approach towards youth development, career awareness, and social upliftment.

Welcoming the MUT delegation, His Worship the Mayor, Councillor Radebe, delivered a passionate message encouraging learners to prioritise education and use it as a tool to reshape their futures.

“Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to shape the world,” he said, urging learners to work hard at school, pursue qualifications, and position themselves to bridge South Africa’s scarce skills gap.

He commended the collaboration between MUT and the municipality, acknowledging the sacrifices made by institutions and families alike to create opportunities for young people. The Mayor further encouraged learners to ask questions, prepare early for university applications, and take advantage of the democratic opportunities that make education increasingly accessible in South Africa.
