MUT Management reconnects with Founder’s Family to unveil strategic ‘catalytic programmes’
While the founding of Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) by Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi stands as its ultimate historic anchor, the Institution’s timeline is punctuated by several definitive milestones. From its historic first graduation ceremony to its official evolution into a fully-fledged university of technology in 2007, MUT has continually reshaped its legacy. On 29 May 2026, a new milestone was etched into the University’s history.
A high-level MUT management delegation, led by Interim Vice-Chancellor and Principal Professor Rushiella Songca, paid a historic visit to the family of the late Founder. The visit served a dual purpose: to re-establish and strengthen the deep-rooted bond between the Institution and the Buthelezi family; and to provide vital updates on the University’s rapidly evolving strategic direction.
Meeting with the Founder’s family team, led by His Royal Highness (HRH) Prince Zuzifa Buthelezi, the son of the University’s founder, Professor Songca unveiled an ambitious roadmap anchored by four key “catalytic programmes” designed to drive MUT into its next era.
The first core initiative presented by Professor Songca is the establishment of the prestigious Founder’s Lecture. According to the Interim Vice-Chancellor, the overarching goal of this lecture series is to significantly enhance MUT’s national and international visibility, lift its global profile, and advance high-level strategic partnerships.
The University aims to attract globally respected thinkers and leaders to spearhead these lectures, effectively positioning MUT as a hub for innovation, leadership, and critical public discourse. Professor Songca emphasized that the intellectual engagement from these lectures would serve as a vital academic asset for undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate students alike.
Addressing institutional sustainability, Professor Songca introduced the “Friends of MUT” programme. This initiative is structured to amplify the University’s societal footprint and enhance its global reputation. Crucially, the programme is expected to serve as a cornerstone for the long-term financial sustainability of the Institution by consolidating and expanding MUT’s fundraising and financial endeavours.
With an eye toward improving student life and academic outcomes, the third initiative focuses directly on campus experience through the introduction of Creative Hubs. Professor Songca explained that this programme will introduce a diverse menu of projects tailored to enrich the everyday experiences of students on campus, with the ultimate objective of boosting overall academic success and graduation rates.
The final catalytic programme addresses internationalisation and strategic alignment, specifically built to reinforce the core academic and research business of the institution. Directly addressing HRH Prince Zuzifa Buthelezi, Professor Songca outlined how this programme will seek to broaden and institutionalise strategic alliances in direct support of the University’s IGNITE 2030 strategic plan. The initiative will streamline international student exchange programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels to ensure maximum impact and sustainability. Furthermore, it will aggressively leverage modern technology by funding digital-first infrastructure, including smart classrooms and advanced simulation laboratories.
In closing her presentation, Professor Songca made a heartfelt appeal to the legacy bearers of the University’s history, noting that external and strategic partners are absolutely critical to turning the goals of IGNITE 2030 into reality. “We request the support of the Founder’s family and friends to help realise our aspirations,” Professor Songca stated.
The historic meeting marks a profound alignment of MUT’s rich historical roots with its tech-driven, globally-minded future, ensuring that the legacy of Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi continues to shape generations to come.
