Academics from Mangosuthu University of Technology made a significant mark at the recent World Environmental Health Day Commemoration, taking home research accolades and demonstrating the University’s commitment to community-centred science.

Held at Durban’s Capital Zimbali from 29 to 30 September 2026 under the theme “Environmental Health: Standing with Science to Protect Communities,” the national symposium was jointly hosted by the National Department of Health, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health, and the iLembe District Municipality. The gathering convened academics, policymakers, practitioners, and government officials to examine how rigorous environmental health research can build healthier, more resilient communities.

Led by Dr Thobile Poswa, Head of the Department of Environmental Health, the MUT delegation, which included Dr Mpou Manyatsa, Dr Siphesihle Masimula, and Dr Mathews Lecheko, showcased work directly aligned with local and national public health priorities.

Presenting at the Commission on “the Implementation of Environmental Health Interventions for Community Protection”, Dr Lecheko highlighted a participatory initiative at Silimela Primary School in KwaMashu, Durban. Dr Lecheko’s study focused on empowering young learners and residents to become active leaders in improving environmental health practices and awareness.
