MUT empowers sports coaches to drive 2030 Vision and student development

Mangosuthu University of Technology is set to host a comprehensive two-day empowerment programme next week aimed at integrating new and returning sport coaches into the Institution’s unique organisational culture. The initiative, scheduled for 20–21 July 2026, is designed to equip more than 30 coaches with the knowledge and values necessary to ensure both the competitive success of their teams and the holistic growth of MUT student-athletes.

According to Bongile Ganyile, Sport Officer in the Department of Sport and Recreation, the University expects its coaching staff to play a role that extends far beyond the scoreboard. “While coaches have professional skills, we would like them to know that at MUT we require them to develop students so they become well-rounded individuals that will be ready to fit in all environments, including work environments,” Ganyile said. “Their role is bigger than sport.”

A primary focus of the two-day seminar will be aligning the coaches’ efforts with the University’s 2030 Vision and deeply instilling MUT’s core values. In addition to professional development and strategic alignment, the programme will address critical social issues. Reflecting MUT’s firm stance against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), the curriculum includes a dedicated lecture on safeguarding to ensure a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for all student-athletes.

To provide a comprehensive onboarding experience, the programme will feature insights from a diverse lineup of University leadership, sporting veterans, and academic officials. Some of these are Professor Sibusiso Chalufu, Dean of Students; Siyabulela Mkwalo, Deputy Director, MUT Sport and Recreation; Dr Mfanozelwe Shozi, Deputy Director, CEAD; and Thabo Dladla, veteran football coach.

By connecting coaches directly with MUT officials, the Department of Sport and Recreation aims to build a cohesive sporting department that champions student success both on the field and in their future careers.
