MUT recently extended its community outreach efforts to Montclair, Durban, bringing education, wellness, and sport to the learners of Ningizimu Special School as part of its ongoing Mandela Month commemorations. Held on 24 July 2026, the impactful initiative was a collaborative effort driven by the University’s Community Engagement and Development Directorate (CEAD), the Student Counselling Unit, the Disability Office Unit, and the Sports and Recreation Unit. Designed to inspire and empower learners with special educational needs, the outreach blended interactive learning with recreational activities.
During the programme, representatives from the Student Counselling Unit led vital educational sessions focused on emotional resilience and mental wellbeing; life skills tailored to empower learners; and inclusive development within educational spaces. Simultaneously, the Sports and Recreation Unit energised the school grounds with a dynamic lineup of sporting activities, which included soccer, netball, basketball, and aerobics. These sessions were designed to promote physical fitness while encouraging teamwork and active participation among all learners.
Speaking on the significance of the outreach, Nomalungelo Ngcingolo one of the organisers from the Department of Agriculture, emphasized the University’s dedication to societal impact. “The Mandela Month reminds us that meaningful change begins through service. By engaging with learners and creating opportunities for learning and development, we are investing in a more inclusive and empowered future.”
Addressing the attendees, Siyabulela Mkwalo, Deputy Director: Sport and Recreation Unit, reflected on the profound love and compassion that former President Nelson Mandela held for children. Mkwalo urged participants to honour Mandela’s legacy through acts of kindness, selfless service, and by opening doors of opportunity for every child.
Embodying this spirit of goodwill, the Sport and Recreation Unit concluded the visit by donating a collection of soccer balls, basketballs, and netballs to the school. The equipment is intended to provide long-term support, ensuring that the spirit of active recreation continues to benefit the learners well beyond Mandela Month. MUT reaffirmed its ongoing commitment to building sustainable relationships with local schools and community stakeholders through dedicated, impact-driven outreach programmes.
