The Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research, Innovation and Engagement (RIE) at Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) proudly announces that Dr Nkululeko Nkosi has been awarded a prestigious Y2 rating by the National Research Foundation (NRF). Dr Nkosi, a Lecturer in the Department of Chemical Engineering within the Faculty of Engineering, received the peer-reviewed recognition following his 2026 rating application. Effective from 1 January 2026, this rating establishes him among South Africa’s most promising emerging researchers.
The NRF Y category specifically recognises young scholars who have held a doctorate for less than five years and demonstrate strong potential to establish themselves in their fields. A Y2 rating indicates that an overwhelming majority of peer reviewers recognise the researcher’s track record and future potential based on recent research outputs.
Dr Nkosi’s research specialises in thermodynamics, separation processes, energy systems and mineral resource recovery. His focus centres on translating laboratory-stage research into pilot-scale testing and practical commercial applications. This achievement builds upon his prior accomplishments, including winning a Bronze Award at the 2024 MUT Research Awards.
“This is a significant personal milestone for Dr Nkosi and an equally important achievement for MUT,” said Professor Mncedisi Maphalala, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research, Innovation and Engagement. “Every additional NRF-rated researcher strengthens the University’s research capacity, enhances our scholarly standing, and moves us closer to building a vibrant, productive, and internationally recognised research culture,” said Professor Maphalala.
Professor Maphalala highlighted the industrial and societal relevance of Dr Nkosi’s focus areas, noting that MUT remains committed to supporting his expanded national and international collaborations, as well as his mentorship of postgraduate students.
Dr Nkosi’s recognition reflects MUT’s ongoing strategic commitment to growing its cohort of NRF-rated researchers and building a sustainable pipeline of high-calibre academic talent.
