“Lead from the front, but never lead alone” – Songca reflects on collaborative leadership

Professor Rushiella Songca

Collaboration, visibility and shared responsibility have emerged as defining characteristics of Professor Rushiella Songca’s leadership philosophy during her first 100 days as Interim Vice-Chancellor and Principal of Mangosuthu University of Technology.

Addressing stakeholders, Professor Songca described her approach as simple but deliberate. “Lead from the front but never lead alone,” she said.

The philosophy has informed a series of engagements with students, staff, organised labour, researchers, alumni, industry partners, government stakeholders and community members.

Professor Songca noted that these interactions reinforced her belief that MUT possesses the talent, resilience and determination necessary to realise the ambitions of IGNITE 2030.

She emphasised that leadership requires presence, accountability and direct engagement with institutional stakeholders, while recognising that sustainable success depends on collective effort. “The progress we celebrate today belongs to all of us,” she said.

She thanked Council, management, academic staff, professional support staff and students for their contribution towards building a stronger institution.

Looking ahead, she reaffirmed the university’s commitment to strengthening research, advancing digital transformation, enhancing the student experience and expanding strategic partnerships.
