Highlighting the vital role of campus media in nurturing young media talent, broadcaster Slindile Ngobese has credited Mangosuthu University of Technology’s campus radio station, MUT Radio, as the launchpad for her rising career in commercial radio. Ngobese served as the Programmes Manager, and Head of News at MUT Radio between 2022 and 2024. Reflecting on her tenure, Ngebese described the station as a solid foundation that equipped her with essential skills, hands-on experience, and the confidence required to excel in the competitive broadcast industry.
“Managing programming and news operations prepared me directly for the professional space I now occupy,” Ngobese shared. “The opportunities, lessons, and responsibilities I gained at MUT Radio continue to have a lasting impact on my career today.”
Her time at the campus radio station paved the way for immediate career progression. After leaving MUT Radio in 2024, Ngobese spent nearly two years at Vuma FM as a journalist and on-air news presenter. She subsequently joined Gagasi FM, where she currently serves as a Morning Traffic Anchor on prime time shows.
Ngobese’s transition to commercial radio reached a major milestone within less than two months of joining Gagasi FM, when she was selected to co-host the station’s flagship Breakfast Show as part of a special Women’s Day line-up. Ngobese points to this opportunity as a direct testament to the training and preparation she received during her formative years in campus radio.
Expressing her gratitude to the station and its supporters, Ngobese emphasised the broader importance of investing in aspiring broadcasters. “MUT Radio has played a significant role in nurturing talent and creating opportunities for young broadcasters,” she stated. “I remain grateful for the platform, the mentorship, and the invaluable experience that continues to shape my career.”
