Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) has reached another milestone in academic excellence, following prestigious recognition for one of its leading academics. Dr Joseph Bwapwa, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Civil Engineering, has officially been granted a C2 rating by the National Research Foundation (NRF). The accolade places him among an elite group of established researchers in South Africa, bringing immense pride to the Faculty of Engineering and the University community.
An NRF C2 rating serves as an authoritative endorsement of scholarly quality. Under NRF guidelines, a C2 rating signifies that a researcher is recognised by nearly all peer reviewers as an established scholar with a sustained, high-quality record of productivity in their discipline. To secure this rating, all peer reviewers, with the allowance of no more than a single minor concern from one reviewer, must firmly agree that the applicant is an established researcher. Furthermore, the rating acknowledges that the academic has produced a coherent body of quality work over a continuous seven-to-eight-year evaluation period, demonstrating an ability to solve complex problems using sound research methodologies. While international recognition is optional for a C2 designation, many recipients, including Dr Bwapwa, possess notable global visibility.
Reflecting on the milestone, Dr Bwapwa expressed profound joy and humility at the announcement, noting that the recognition caught him off guard after years of rigorous behind-the-scenes work. “The news just shot up from nowhere. I am so happy that my work has been recognised,” said Dr Bwapwa, whose evaluation period spanned seven full years of continuous output.
Dr Bwapwa’s scholarly record features impressive quantitative and qualitative milestones. Over his career, he has published close to 40 peer-reviewed journal papers, most of which appear in top-tier Q1 and Q2 scientific journals, along with eight book chapters and one edited book. His research influence is reflected in more than 1,400 citations and an H-index of 19. On the international stage, Dr Bwapwa has presented nearly 20 papers at groundbreaking global conferences, where he has also served as a session moderator.
In addition to his publications, Dr Bwapwa has built a strong reputation for attracting competitive research funding locally and internationally. Notably, he secured substantial funding through Biotherp, a prominent international consortium of universities and research centres worldwide. Within South Africa, the Biotherp consortium comprises MUT, the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), and Stellenbosch University.
Despite his individual accomplishments, Dr Bwapwa was quick to share the credit for his milestone, dedicating the NRF rating to his students across all levels. “I dedicate this award to all my students, both undergraduate and postgraduate,” he stated, reaffirming his ongoing commitment to mentoring the next generation of engineers.
