Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) is celebrating a major academic milestone after the National Research Foundation (NRF) awarded a prestigious C2 rating to Dr Joseph KB Bwapwa of the Department of Civil Engineering.
The National Research Foundation defines C-rated scholars as established researchers who demonstrate a sustained record of quality productivity, continuous engagement, and the conceptual ability to investigate complex problems in their field. A C2 rating specifically signifies that reviewers are firmly convinced of the applicant’s status as an established researcher.
Professor Mncedisi Maphalala, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Research, Innovation and Engagement (RIE) at MUT, praised the milestone as “an important scholarly achievement.” Dr Bwapwa has built a robust, interdisciplinary research portfolio focused on water and wastewater treatment, environmental engineering, green energy, algae biotechnology, and climate-change mitigation. His work bridges engineering and biotechnology to turn waste and biomass into actionable solutions for renewable energy and clean water.
The Office of the DVC: RIE extended its congratulations to Dr Bwapwa, noting that his achievement reinforces MUT’s ongoing push to expand its research visibility, foster academic excellence, and address pressing environmental and societal challenges through innovation.
