MUT Council Chair Dr Mosidi Makgae has hailed Founder’s Annual Lecture as a moment to honour MUT’s extraordinary beginnings while looking boldly towards 2030.
As Mangosuthu University of Technology prepares to host its Founder’s Annual Lecture on 3 October 2026 at the Durban ICC, Dr Makgae has expressed Council’s enthusiastic support for an occasion she believes speaks powerfully to the University’s history and future.
This year’s lecture, themed “Towards 2030: MUT’s Shared Vision for South Africa’s Higher Education Contribution to the Global World of Work,” comes at an important time in MUT’s journey as the University advances its IGNITE 2030 strategy, while remaining anchored in the vision that gave birth to the Institution.
For Dr Makgae, the Founder’s Annual Lecture is much more than a fixture on the University calendar. It is an opportunity for the MUT community to reflect on the foresight, courage and enduring legacy of Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, whose vision for accessible technical education created opportunities that have transformed generations of lives.
“There is something profoundly powerful about an Institution taking the time to remember why it exists. MUT was born from a vision that education could change not only individual lives, but families and communities. Council is immensely proud to see that founding vision continuing to find expression in the ambitions of the University today,” said Dr Makgae.
Dr Makgae believes this year’s theme is particularly significant because it deliberately connects MUT’s heritage with the kind of University it seeks to become by 2030.
“We honour our Founder most meaningfully when we take the values and aspirations that shaped this University and use them to build its future. As Council, we are excited by the conversation this Lecture creates around MUT’s contribution to South Africa, to the continent and to a rapidly changing global world of work.”
Dr Makgae said Council’s support for the Founder’s Annual Lecture also reflects its confidence in the strategic direction the University is pursuing under the leadership of Interim Vice-Chancellor and Principal Professor Rushiella Songca.
