The MUT Staff Football Club is celebrating a landmark achievement after being crowned champions of the 2025/2026 Workers Soccer League, while simultaneously launching a bold new chapter with the unveiling of its official team kit on 26 June 2026.
Having emerged victorious in a fiercely contested league against formidable opponents, including Prince Mshiyeni Hospital FC, CIPLA FC, FFS Refinery FC, Wentworth Hospital FC, and Pick n Pay FC, the club’s success has become a source of pride for the entire MUT community.
According to one of the club leaders, Tebello Mofokeng, the title belongs to everyone who has supported the team’s journey. “The Mangosuthu University of Technology Staff Football Club has written a remarkable chapter in the Institution’s sporting history. After a fiercely contested 2025/2026 season, the club clinched the Workers Soccer League title. This triumph belongs not only to the players on the field, but to everyone who cheered from the sidelines and believed in the club’s vision,” he said.
The celebrations come at an exciting time for the club, which currently tops the standings in the first leg of the 2026/2027 Workers Soccer League season as it begins the defence of its championship title.
Adding to the momentum, the club officially unveiled its new playing kit on 26 June 2026, a symbol of renewed ambition and institutional pride. “The fresh strip is more than a uniform,” said Mofokeng. “It represents renewed ambition, institutional pride and the values that the MUT community holds dear.”
While trophies remain an important measure of success, the MUT Staff Football Club sees its purpose extending well beyond competition. The club actively promotes a healthy, active lifestyle among staff members, recognising that physical well-being contributes to professional performance, productivity, and overall quality of life. Equally important is the role football plays in strengthening relationships across the University.
In an Institution as diverse as MUT, the football club has become a space where colleagues from different faculties, departments and professional backgrounds come together, fostering friendship, teamwork and a shared sense of belonging.
The club also contributes positively to staff wellness by creating opportunities for recreation, social interaction and stress relief, helping to ease the mental health pressures that often accompany demanding workplaces.
“More than trophies, we are building a community that reflects the very best of what MUT stands for, unity, excellence and a commitment to our people,” Mofokeng said.
As the club looks to the future, it extends an open invitation to all MUT staff members to join its growing family. Whether as players, supporters or volunteers, everyone has a role to play in strengthening the club. “We are looking for staff willing to play in matches and attend training, passionate fans to support us on match days, volunteers to assist with administration and logistics, and brand ambassadors to spread the word across MUT,” Mofokeng said. Mofokeng emphasised that successful teams are built not only by the players on the field, but also by the commitment and enthusiasm of those who support them from the sidelines.
Winning the Workers Soccer League title marks an important milestone, but the club’s ambitions extend much further. The next goal is to compete in tournaments organised by the South African University Sports Association (SAUSSA), where the club hopes to represent MUT against the country’s leading university staff teams.
Achieving that vision, Mofokeng said, will require continued growth in membership, stronger institutional support and greater involvement from the University community.
The club believes it represents far more than football. Every player who wears the MUT colours serves as an ambassador for the Institution, demonstrating discipline, respect and excellence both on and off the field. These values align closely with the University’s MYMUT values and the aspirations of the IGNITE 2030 campaign, which seeks to transform MUT through excellence, innovation and people-centred development.
