To foster early interest in science and higher education, a team from the Department of Biomedical Sciences at Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) recently visited Zandile Primary School in Umlazi Township. The aim was to deliver an engaging Career Guidance Outreach Programme to Grade 7 learners.
The initiative, held on 26 August 2026, forms part of MUT’s ongoing commitment to community engagement and educational empowerment. Khethiwe Bhengu, Mally Mncube, Senamile Dlamini, Hope Manzini, and Onako Thabethe represented the department. As opening speakers at the school’s Career Day, the MUT team introduced learners to the Bachelor of Health Sciences (BHSc) programme in Medical Laboratory Sciences. Through interactive presentations, the scientists detailed the crucial role laboratory professionals play in healthcare, outlined academic admission requirements, and highlighted diverse career pathways within the health sciences sector.
The outreach aimed to demystify science careers for young learners at a critical stage in their education, encouraging academic excellence and motivating them to aim for higher education. The visit resonated strongly with both students and staff. The school management expressed their gratitude by presenting the MUT delegation with tokens of appreciation and an official certificate, cementing a positive relationship between the University and the local Umlazi community.
The event underlines MUT’s dedication to using its academic expertise to uplift surrounding communities and inspire the next generation of South African scientists.
