MUT launches Vice-Chancellor’s Research VLOGS to showcase research excellence during Mandela Month
Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) today unveiled MUT Research Conversations, known as VLOGS as a flagship Vice-Chancellor’s initiative designed to bring the University’s research closer to society by making it accessible, relevant and engaging for all.
The official launch, held at MUT’s newly constructed Theatre, transformed the University’s leading researchers into the centre of attention as they shared the stories behind their groundbreaking work with Interim Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Rushiella Songca. Executive Management, Senior Management, academics, researchers, students and invited guests witnessed the unveiling of a platform that celebrates the people and ideas driving research excellence at the University.
The VLOG series, whose trailer was shown, and now features across MUT’s digital platforms, features conversations between Professor Songca and some of the University’s most accomplished researchers, covering topics ranging from Indigenous Knowledge, Artificial Intelligence, and biotechnology to renewable energy, climate resilience, food security and sustainable communities.
Addressing guests at the launch, Professor Songca reflected on her first months at the University and the inspiration behind the initiative. “Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela reminded us that education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. I believe that research gives education its relevance. It enables universities to not only teach what is already known, but also to generate new knowledge that responds to society’s changing needs.”
Professor Songca explained that during her first 100 days in office, she prioritised listening to the University’s stakeholders, including its researchers, to understand both MUT’s strengths and the opportunities for growth.
Drawing from her previous experience as Vice-Chancellor of Walter Sisulu University, she noted that research excellence is achieved through deliberate investment in people, leadership and institutional support.
“Research excellence does not emerge by chance. It grows when an institution deliberately creates an environment in which researchers are recognised, supported and encouraged to share their work.”
She further announced that, following discussions with the Chairperson of Council, the University secured an additional R200 000 in seed funding to strengthen research initiatives, with the funding being managed by Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research, Innovation and Engagements, Professor Mncedisi Maphalala.
Professor Songca emphasised that MUT Research Conversations forms part of a broader strategy to elevate the University’s research profile while making research understandable beyond academic circles.
“Research should not remain confined to academic journals, conference presentations or laboratory reports. Universities also have a responsibility to explain why research matters and how it contributes to improving society.”
She said the series would inspire prospective students, create opportunities for collaboration with industry and government, and demonstrate how university research addresses real-world challenges facing communities.
She further highlighted ongoing discussions with Professor Maphalala, which aim to strengthen research governance systems and accelerate the completion of doctoral studies across the Institution.
A highlight of the event was the formal recognition of the researchers who participated in the inaugural series. They include Professor Roger Coopoosamy, Professor Papy Numbi, Dr Kavita Behara, Dr Karishma Singh, Nokukhanya Thembane, Dr Bongekile Mvuyana, Dr Devashan Naidoo, Dr Cyprial Ndumiso Ncobela, Dr Bethel Mutanga, and Professor Xolile Mkhize.
Collectively, their research explores some of the world’s most pressing challenges, including Indigenous healthcare systems, sustainable energy, artificial intelligence in healthcare, medicinal plants, biotechnology, climate resilience, food security, technology and society, and Indigenous food systems.
Professor Songca thanked the researchers for opening their work to the broader public and acknowledged MUT’s Marketing and Communications team for conceptualising and producing the series.
The launch marks another significant milestone in the University’s IGNITE 2030 strategy, reinforcing research, innovation and engagement as key drivers of institutional growth and societal impact.
