Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) reinforced its commitment to youth development and community engagement by participating in the Youth Summit hosted by Isizwe samaNdungwana at Greenville Junior Secondary School in Bizana, Eastern Cape, on 15 June 2026.
Mfundo Makhanya, a Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry, said the summit brought together Grade 9 and Grade 12 learners from the Bizana community, creating an opportunity to inspire young people and expose them to the possibilities offered by higher education. The event focused on showcasing academic pathways and encouraging learners to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
MUT played a prominent role in the programme through presentations from its academic departments, including Chemistry, Biomedical Sciences, and Mechanical Engineering. Learners were introduced to a range of study opportunities available at the university and gained valuable insight into how the subjects they currently study at school can serve as stepping stones toward rewarding careers in science and engineering.
The University’s participation was further strengthened by the presence of Professor Alfred Msomi, Dean of Applied and Health Sciences, who highlighted MUT’s commitment to supporting learners from communities bordering KwaZulu-Natal. Addressing attendees, he emphasized the institution’s dedication to making higher education accessible and ensuring that learners from Bizana view MUT as a welcoming destination for their academic and professional aspirations.
The summit was not only an educational engagement but also a celebration of partnership and community spirit. In a heartfelt gesture of appreciation, Isizwe samaNdungwana and members of the Greenville community presented MUT with a sheep.
For many learners, the summit opened doors to new possibilities and provided motivation to pursue higher education. Through direct interaction with university representatives and academics, attendees gained a clearer understanding of the opportunities available to them beyond secondary school.
