New Chairperson of MUT puts a strong emphasis on governance

Dr Mosidi Makgae

The Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) is poised for a transformative period under its newly appointed Chairperson, Dr Mosidi Makgae, who succeeds Professor Stanley Mukhola, who was an interim Chairperson. This appointment is anticipated to yield significant benefits for the Institution, particularly through Dr Makgae’s strategic emphasis on critical areas integral to the University’s long-term sustainability and success.

As Chairperson of the MUT Council, Dr Makgae will assume a pivotal role in high-level governance, ensuring the Institution’s effective oversight. Her leadership is structured around five core strategic domains: finance, governance, human resources, student affairs, and innovation, coupled with community engagement. Dr Makgae asserts that these domains constitute the foundational elements of a successful academic institution.

Dr Makgae envisions an MUT characterised by enhanced financial sustainability, robust governance frameworks, a motivated workforce, and sustained community connections. Her objective is to lead the Council toward making informed decisions that promote institutional growth and adaptability in a dynamic educational landscape.

On financial sustainability, Dr Makgae highlights the necessity of strategic funding initiatives. In addition to prudent financial management, Dr Makgae will prioritize identifying and cultivating diverse revenue streams—ranging from collaborative partnerships with the business sector to acquiring research grants and expanding public-facing services—thereby ensuring the University’s capacity for sustainable growth.

In the realm of governance, Dr Makgae is dedicated to advancing ethical leadership, fostering transparency, and facilitating participatory decision-making processes. She envisions an institutional environment in which all stakeholders—from Council members to academics, staff, and students—are cognizant of their roles and contribute to a culture founded upon honesty, equity, and accountability.

Furthermore, Dr Makgae seeks to enhance the linkage between students and the job market by amplifying opportunities for internships, mentorships, and practical experiences, thereby equipping graduates with the skills requisite for post-academic success.

Dr Makgae’s vision and leadership credentials are fortified by her extensive experience in governance and management within the scientific sector. Holding a PhD in Environmental Chemistry from Stellenbosch University, and a Master’s degree from North-West University, Dr Makgae has occupied pivotal roles at esteemed organisations such as the CSIR, Pebble Bed Modular Reactor, and the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (NECSA).

With her profound expertise and unwavering commitment to MUT’s advancement, Dr Makgae is well-positioned to navigate the University toward a new era of growth and academic excellence.

Professor Nokuthula Sibiya, the Vice-Chancellor and Principal of MUT, has expressed her warm congratulations on Dr Makgae’s appointment. She is enthusiastic about the opportunity for collaboration, noting that their shared visions hold great potential for the advancement and benefit of MUT.
