2026 SRC Elections at Seme Hall: SASCO claims five seats, EFF Youth Command follows close behind

The preliminary results of the 2026 SRC elections held at Seme Hall on October 1, 2026, have been announced. Terry Tselane, Chief Electoral Officer and Executive Chairman of the Institute for Election Management Services in Africa (IEMSA), which oversaw the election process, certified the results.

Three student formations contested the elections:

  • The South African Student Congress (SASCO) received 1,669 votes, earning them five seats.
  • The EFF Youth Command secured four seats with a total of 1,613 votes.
  • Two independent candidates also succeeded: Sphiwesihle Mzila received 1,643 votes, and Athandile Mpungose received 1,627 votes, each earning one seat.

Other independent candidates in the race included Ntando Ngidi, Mdumiseni Chonco, and Lethokuhle Hlabisa.

Total voter turnout was 3,679. The final results will be released within 48 hours, allowing participants an opportunity to review and challenge the election results if necessary.
