Campus spirit is at an all-time high as the 2026 Residence League continues to deliver thrilling competition across three major sporting codes: Football, Netball, and Chess. Since kicking off on 27 July 2026, the league has seen enthusiastic turnout from students, featuring 32 football teams, seven netball teams, and 40 individual chess players.
The Sport and Recreation Unit’s Bongile Ganyile said that the football tournament has officially reached the highly anticipated Last 16 stage, building tension toward the final showdown scheduled for 4 September 2026. Beyond bragging rights, participants are competing for a substantial pool of prize money across both team and individual categories. The team prize breakdown is as follows:

- 1st Place: R15,000.00
- 2nd Place: R7,500.00
- 3rd Place: R3,500.00
- Netball:
- 1st Place: R10,000.00
- 2nd Place: R5,000.00
- 3rd Place: R2,500.00

Standout performers will also be recognized for their exceptional contributions. Individual awards carrying a R500.00 prize each will be presented for:
- Player of the Tournament
- Coach of the Tournament
- Top Goal Scorer
- Goalkeeper of the Tournament
More than just a recreational event, the Residence League serves a strategic purpose for campus sports. Head coaches from MUT’s senior teams are regular spectators on the sidelines, using the fixtures as a primary talent identification platform to spot promising athletes.
By offering a structured competitive environment, the league drives active student engagement while simultaneously building a sustainable pipeline of talent to strengthen MUT’s flagship sports teams for seasons to come. Students are encouraged to come out to the remaining fixtures and support their fellow residences as the tournament approaches its final stage.
