Institutional Advancement (IA) at MUT is a new structure which seeks to advance the University’s Vision and Mission, and its Strategic Goals, through three key pillars:
- Fundraising and Development
- Enterprise Development
- Alumni Relations
While its over-arching thrust is to establish and secure an enabling environment and financial sustainability, Institutional Advancement will advocate for and support all advancement initiatives; streamline, centralise and channel initiatives to attain professionalisation and to optimise outcomes, and seek partners for the generation of Third-stream Income. In this endeavour, it will work closely with leadership, academic and support structures at MUT.
IA goals: To introduce, integrate and embed the philosophy and practice of advancement into the institution, through a focus on Fundraising and Development, Enterprise Development and Alumni Relations.
Our Vision: To become an exemplar of institutional advancement practice and a worthy social investment partner.
Our Mission: To advance MUT through resource mobilisation, philanthropic partnerships and enterprise, for a sustainable future.
Advancement is a collective, institutional effort!

Alumni Relations
The establishment of an alumni community that is organised, driven and productive in serving as key ambassadors who mobilise resources, is crucial. Our alumni are our resources, after all.
Institutional Advancement, through a results-oriented paradigm shift which sees alumni as our primary resources, has conceptualised a project called R100m & change, geared to mobilising the resources that will enable MUT to grow in various areas. The project has 10 pillars or goals which identify key areas of growth to respond to some of the challenges facing the institution, all alumni-driven.

Enterprise Development
Enterprise Development will drive MUT’s enterprise income-generating strategy in an effort to increase third-stream income and financial sustainability, through the running of hybrid Short Courses. It will be the centralised hub for all MUT’s enterprise development efforts, offering short courses to industry and commerce, and the Municipality, in their workspaces, and as per their need, and as part of their skills development programmes. Programmes will also be offered on campus premises using facilities, with permissions and security, in partnership with Umlazi community creatives, efforts, and organisations. It seeks to establish small business partnerships that will facilitate student, community and alumni employment, financial independence and job creation.
Short courses will include:
- Environmental Health Impact Assessment (EHIA)
- Food Safety for ready-to-eat food handlers
- Environmental Management Inspectors (EMI)
- Entrepreneurship
- Supply Chain Management (SCM)
- IsiZulu

Fundraising and Development
MUT, like other HEIs, needs to diversify its income streams for financial sustainability, and to create an enabling environment for academic success. Our students deserve nothing less.
The brief of the Fundraising and Development Office is to mobilise resources, including third-stream income, that will achieve these goals. It therefore seeks partnerships with the private sector, individuals, philanthropic organisations and community, both nationally and internationally.
Our Fact Sheet, Case for Support and Project Portfolio present not only the significant history and achievements of this HEI, which has as its strength its location in the sprawling, vibrant township of Umlazi, and which continues to deliver its academic programme despite challenges, but also its current needs.
Details on Projects and our Case for Support may be obtained from the Fundraising and Development Office in Institutional Advancement. Have a look at our project Portfolio and R100m & Change Campaign, to find your fit!
All gifts and donations will be acknowledged, with much gratitude! Section 18A Tax Certificates will follow on receipt of any donation to MUT.
