The Institutional Advancement’s Enterprise Development Unit (EnDev) hosted a Satellite Communication Short Course from 20–24 October 2025, as part of the University’s ongoing commitment to community-focused skills development. The Enterprise Development Unit forms part of the Institutional Advancement Directorate at Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT). The programme was facilitated by Dear Youth SA and funded through a donor pledge, reflecting a strong partnership between the University and external stakeholders to create meaningful learning opportunities for youth. The event took place at the New Engineering Building on MUT’s main campus.
To ensure broader community participation, the Unit collaborated with CEAD, which works closely with non-governmental organisations. CEAD has been sending sound waves that raise the MUT flag across MUT’s communities. Through this partnership, The Centre for Community Development South Africa, an NGO based in Umlazi, successfully identified and referred 10 young participants from various OSS structures across Umlazi wards to participate in the training. The week-long course introduced participants to the fundamentals of satellite technology, offering hands-on experience with communication systems and digital transmission. It also aimed to enhance employability and promote entrepreneurship in the digital and telecommunications sectors.
“This course opened our eyes to the possibilities in technology and communications,” said Philile Miya (21) from Umlazi Q Section. “I now feel more confident about pursuing a career in ICT and digital innovation,” added Thembinkosi Mahaye (24) from Umlazi B Section. Most participants joined the course to gain practical, employable skills and explore opportunities in the growing digital economy. Many described the experience as both motivational and life changing. The course combined theory and practical applications, covering topics such as satellite orbits, signal transmission, and communication system fundamentals. Participants also engaged in assessment and reflection sessions to consolidate their learning. The training was widely praised for its relevance and hands-on approach.
MUT’s Enterprise Development Unit emphasised the importance of collaboration in delivering community-based skills initiatives. “Collaborating with local organisations like Dear Youth SA enables us to equip young people with practical skills that can transform their futures while strengthening community engagement,” said Ms Philile Sithole, Enterprise Development Unit (EnDev). Looking ahead, EnDev plans to expand the programme to reach additional communities and introduce advanced modules in digital communication technologies. The University is also exploring new partnerships to enhance practical training opportunities.
This initiative reflects MUT’s commitment to innovation, education, and community empowerment, ensuring that local youth are prepared to thrive in South Africa’s growing technology sector.
