On 31 March 2026, Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) reached an important institutional milestone with the successful submission of its Institutional Improvement Plan (IIP) Progress Report to the Council on Higher Education (CHE), marking a strong close to the University’s first term.

Led by Dr Phiwayinkosi Gumede, Director: Quality Management Directorate (QMD), the IIP Report was officially submitted on 31 March 2026, following due consideration and approval by Senate and Council. The CHE has since formally acknowledged receipt of the submission, an achievement that reflects both compliance and institutional cohesion. “This submission is particularly significant for MUT,” noted Dr Gumede, “as it demonstrates our collective ability to meet national regulatory requirements, while drawing on meaningful institutional contributions across the University.”

The successful completion of the report was the result of a coordinated institutional effort. Contributions from various units ensured that the submission was both comprehensive and reflective of MUT’s commitment to continuous improvement and accountability.

Dr Gumede extended his appreciation to all stakeholders involved: “We wish to express our sincere gratitude to colleagues across the University for their valuable input and steadfast commitment. Meeting the deadline required focus, collaboration, and professionalism, all of which were demonstrated throughout this process.”

The exercise has also yielded important lessons that will inform future submissions. In preparation for the next IIP Progress Report, due in September 2026, QMD will develop a targeted action plan to streamline processes and ease pressure points associated with tight timelines.

Support from institutional leadership played a critical role in the success of the submission. Professor Marcus Ramogale, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Teaching and Learning, provided strategic oversight, guiding the articulation and critical evaluation of inputs to ensure the report met the required standards of quality and coherence.

The spirit of collaboration and excellence did not go unnoticed. Professor Marcus Ramogale the Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Teaching and Learning said, “Many thanks to Dr Gumede and his QMD team, and to our tireless activity owners. You can be proud of the quality work you produced, juggling many other responsibilities without losing your focus. More power to your elbow!”. This was supported by various senior managers who were part of the development of the report which was strongly guided and supported by the QMD directorate and Professor Ramogale.

As the University transitions into the next phase of its academic calendar, the successful submission stands as a testament to what can be achieved through collective effort, strong leadership, and unwavering commitment.

For the QMD team and all those involved, this milestone offers a well-deserved moment of reflection and rest.
