Mangosuthu University of Technology showcased a range of pioneering innovations developed by its researchers at South Africa Innovation Week (SAIW), that took place in Nasrec, Johannesburg, from 16 to 20 March 2026.
Dr Mandla Hlongwane, Deputy Director: Technology Transfer Office (TTO) in the Research directorate, said that the exhibition forms part of the University’s ongoing commitment to advancing research and innovation that address real-world challenges, while contributing to economic development and sustainability.
Also involved in the initiative were Makhosi Cebekhulu and Portia Dlamini, both from the TTO. Their main goal is to connect researchers with potential funders, industry stakeholders, and innovation partners. The platform provides valuable opportunities to foster collaboration and accelerate the commercialisation of locally developed technologies.
Among the MUT innovations on display at Nasrec was the ‘Organic Herbicide’. This is an environmentally friendly solution aimed at sustainable agriculture. There was also a ‘Ceiling in a Can’, a novel construction product designed for efficiency and affordability. This is an affordable ceiling designed for low-cost housing. The MUT team also showcased the ‘Sea Wave Energy Harvester’, a “renewable” energy innovation that harnesses ocean wave power. This wave energy conversion system is designed to capture both the kinetic and potential energy generated by ocean waves and convert it into usable forms of energy. Lastly, there was the ‘Novel Enzyme Inhibitors for Cancer Treatment’. This product is an advanced biochemical solution with potential applications in the healthcare industry. This invention relates to a novel therapeutic solution that utilises specially designed compounds as medicaments that target and inhibit the CYP17A1 and CYP19A1 enzymes.
Dr Mandla Hlongwane emphasised the importance of MUT participating in platforms like the SAIW, stating, “Participation in events like South Africa Innovation Week is critical for bridging the gap between research and industry. It allows us to showcase the practical impact of our innovations, while actively engaging with potential partners and funders who can help take these technologies to market. Our goal is to ensure that the work produced at MUT translates into meaningful socio-economic benefits.”
Through its participation, MUT continues to position itself as a hub of innovation and a key contributor to South Africa’s knowledge economy. The University remains committed to translating research into impactful solutions that benefit society and industry alike.
