MUT Library Services celebrates International Literacy Day, embracing the digital age

Bongiwe Nyide

The Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) Library Services hosted an insightful event on 8 September 2025, to commemorate International Literacy Day. This year’s global theme, “Literacy in the Digital Age,” was brought to life through a series of engaging presentations and demonstrations that highlighted the evolving nature of literacy.

Deputy Director in the Library, Bongiwe Nyide said that sessions focused on academic literacy.  Lethukuthula Khumalo from the Teaching and Learning Development Centre (TLDC) delivered a compelling address on the importance of Academic Literacy, emphasising its role as the foundation for student success. This was followed by a practical presentation that showcased the variety of digital services offered by the MUT Library, empowering students to navigate digital resources effectively.

The theoretical knowledge was immediately put into practice with a live demonstration of the Perlego digital library platform by Masande Mafanga, Reference Librarian. This interactive session gave attendees a hands-on understanding of how to access and utilise e-books and academic texts at their fingertips.

A second presentation from the TLDC expanded the concept of literacy beyond academia, exploring the essential life skills encompassed by digital literacy. Nyide said that this talk equipped attendees with the knowledge to critically engage with digital information and tools.

Nyide also added that the event highlighted that in today’s world, being literate means not only reading and writing, but also effectively navigating the digital environment.
