MUT Library establishes Book Club at a local school

MUT Library staff and Ndukwenhle High School learners

Wrapping up Mandela Month on 29 July 2025, two MUT divisions collaborated so that a local school would benefit. The Library Services partnered with the Community Engagement and Development (CEAD) department for a special project at Umlazi Township’s Ndukwenhle High School. The MUT team established a dedicated book club, “The Reading Marvels,” and provided the school with a block loan of Kobo e-readers. Deputy Director: Library Services, Bongiwe Nyide, said the initiative focused on fostering a love for reading and bridging the digital divide. This initiative aims to encourage a culture of reading while introducing learners to the benefits of digital learning tools.

To make the day engaging, fun quizzes were held with spot prizes awarded, adding excitement, and reinforcing the joy of reading. “This partnership perfectly embodies Madiba’s legacy of education” said Nyide, adding that seeing the learners embracing their e-readers was truly inspiring.

The MUT gesture was appreciated by the school and its strategic partners. A member of the Black Consciousness Movement United (BCMU), Umlazi Chapter, Sibusiso Mncwabe said that the well-balanced, thoughtful and insightful speeches delivered at the launch, together with gifts and the “Kobo Gadgets” were the theoretical and the practical seed-planting real-life demonstrations of MUT’s commitment to a cause of Nation-building and patriotic civic duty.  Mncwabe and the Head of Humanities at Ndukwenhle High School, Linda Baqwa, contacted the MUT library, which was very willing to help.
