In a thrilling initiative to uplift local talent, the Faculty of Applied and Health Sciences at MUT has kicked off a vibrant series of extra Maths, Accounting, and Chemistry lessons for students from Umlazi high schools. This program promises to ignite the academic ambitions of these learners, providing them with an incredible opportunity to excel in their Grade 12 examinations and secure a spot at prestigious universities — including MUT.

During an inspiring address on May 10, 2025, Busi Mahlambi, the Umlazi District Director from the Department of Basic Education, delivered an empowering message to the students: “With hard work and determination, you can give universities a selection headache!” She spoke passionately to the learners from Comtech High, Naleni High, Umlazi Commercial High, Swelihle High, Shumayela High, Reunion Secondary, Isipingo Secondary, Mafumbuka High, and Zwelethu High, urging them to seize this golden opportunity.

Professor Alfred Msomi, Dean of the Faculty, echoed this excitement, highlighting that this initiative is not just about academics but also a significant contribution to community development. “We are running this project in collaboration with the University’s CEAD, and I encourage our academic staff to register their community projects with us,” stated Professor Msomi, emphasising the faculty’s commitment to engaging with and uplifting the community.

As this enriching programme unfolds throughout the year, Mahlambi expressed hope for its continuation in the future, stating, “As long as we still have learners that need help, such projects will be indispensable.” The buzz of excitement among the students is palpable, as they gear up for a brighter academic future with the support and guidance of dedicated educators from MUT. This is not just a programme; it’s a launchpad for the leaders of tomorrow!
