Honouring Mandela through research that changes lives: MUT interim VC and Principal launches new research conversation series

Professor Rushiella Songca

In a powerful tribute to the legacy of Nelson Mandela, MUT interim VC and Principal, Professor Rushiella Songca has officially launched a flagship media and research initiative designed to showcase how academic innovation can solve real-world human challenges. The series highlight how MUT scientists are developing practical solutions for healthcare, energy, climate resilience, indigenous knowledge, and sustainable development.

The newly debuted MUT Research Conversations series brings the University’s leading scientists and researchers directly to the public screen. The initiative highlights practical solutions being developed on campus to address some of the world’s most vexing issues, spanning artificial intelligence, healthcare, biotechnology, energy, food security, and climate resilience.

The launch of the campaign, titled Research. Innovation. Impact., marks a deliberate effort by MUT to bridge the gap between complex laboratory science and everyday community needs. By debuting the series during Mandela Month, the University directly connects its academic mission to Nelson Mandela’s enduring belief that education must be an active tool to empower people and transform society.

At MUT, institutional leaders emphasize that research is far more than an academic exercise or the mere pursuit of publications; it is a vital vehicle for societal transformation. The campaign is designed to humanise the Institution’s scientists, making their breakthroughs accessible, relatable, and deeply relevant to the public.

Beyond celebrating historical legacies, the conversation series gives a tangible, public expression to MUT’s strategic roadmap, IGNITE 2030.

By focusing on how local ideas are actively being transformed into practical solutions, such as leveraging indigenous knowledge systems alongside modern biotechnology or building regional climate resilience, the series demonstrates MUT’s active contribution to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The highly engaging broadcast format aims to keep viewers glued to their screens, offering a front-row seat to how homegrown research is elevating the MUT brand onto national and global platforms. Ultimately, the campaign firmly positions the Institution not just as a traditional producer of knowledge, but as a purpose-driven University whose output creates meaningful, lasting impact for local communities, corporate industry, and future generations.
