Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) has received a significant vote of confidence from the Higher Education Quality Committee (HEQC), which has approved the University’s Institutional Improvement Plan (IP) submitted in response to recommendations from the institutional audit.
The approval, granted during the HEQC meeting on 11 June 2026, recognises the University’s constructive engagement with the audit recommendations and commends the quality of the Improvement Plan. The Committee described the submission as “well-organised, comprehensive, and detailed”, noting the clear alignment between the narrative, tables, and figures. It also acknowledged the University’s notable progress on several audit recommendations, highlighting milestones achieved.
Behind this achievement lie months of dedicated work by the Director of the Quality Management Directorate, Dr Phiwayinkosi Gumede, and his team, who coordinated the development and implementation of the Improvement Plan under the strategic leadership of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Teaching and Learning, Professor Marcus Ramogale.
Describing the feedback as “highly encouraging”, Professor Ramogale said the achievement belongs to the entire University community. Adding on this, Dr Gumede said, “This positive outcome is a direct reflection of the commitment and collective effort demonstrated by all Activity Owners. When I shared this positive feedback with the DVC, Professor Ramogale, he immediately asked me to convey his heartfelt appreciation to all Activity Owners for their dedication. I fully echo his sentiments and remain truly grateful and humbled by your continued commitment towards implementing the Institutional Improvement Plan”.
The endorsement comes at a particularly significant moment for MUT. Just six months after the launch of IGNITE 2030, the University’s strategic vision is already producing measurable outcomes. The HEQC’s recognition demonstrates that the Institution is not only setting ambitious goals but is delivering against them.
With the IGNITE 2030 promise of “From Vision to Delivery”, the approval of the Institutional Improvement Plan serves as an early indication that the University’s commitment to excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement is translating into meaningful progress.
As MUT continues to advance its strategic priorities, this milestone reflects what can be achieved when academic and professional support staff work collectively towards a shared vision, building a University that is future-focused, quality-driven, and committed to delivering lasting impact.
