Internal philanthropy in action: MUT academic leads MUT Student Giving Campaign by example

Dr Refiloe Ntoi

At a time when higher education institutions are increasingly focusing on internal sustainability and shared responsibility, a lecturer at Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) has turned institutional advocacy into direct action. Dr Refiloe Ntoi, a Lecturer in the Department of Nature Conservation and a dedicated committee member of the Student Giving Campaign, has made a personal financial contribution of R1,000 toward the fund she helps guide. The gesture highlights a growing movement toward internal philanthropy at the Institution, signalling that University advancement is a collective responsibility that begins from within.

For Dr Ntoi, the donation is part of a broader philosophy on what it means to support the student body. She emphasises that impactful giving extends far beyond monetary value. “Giving your time, your views, your thoughts, being there to assist, and being there to listen are all gestures of giving. We need to set an example to our students; we need to give them our time, our encouragement, our kindness, and, of course, our support through great initiatives such as the Student Giving Campaign,” Dr Refiloe Ntoi, Lecturer and Committee Member

Dr Ntoi expressed that watching students proactively support one another has been a deeply humbling experience, describing the phenomenon as the “epitome of academic kindness.” By securing backing from university staff, the campaign creates a sustainable ecosystem in which students are empowered to lift up their peers. “We open a path for students to hold each other’s hands and embark on a journey that is only set for them to embrace,” she added.
