MUT secures R58.8 million funding boost as iVC drives delivery-focused leadership

Professor Rushiella Songca

Mangosuthu University of Technology has secured approximately R58.8 million through the Department of Higher Education and Training’s Sibusiso Bengu Development Programme, marking one of the most significant achievements during Professor Rushiella Songca’s first 100 days in office.

The funding follows successful engagements with the Department after a proposal that had remained dormant for nearly two years. Addressing staff and stakeholders, Professor Songca described the release of funds as a sign of growing confidence in the institution’s direction. “The funding will strengthen institutional development initiatives and support the university’s long-term strategic goals under IGNITE 2030”, said Professor Songca.

Professor Songca also announced plans to establish a dedicated Project Management Office to enhance oversight, implementation and monitoring of major institutional projects and grants.

The office will assist in managing strategic funding streams, including the University Capacity Development Grant (UCDG), the Infrastructure Efficiency Grant (IEG), and the Sibusiso Bengu Grant. “I want to see projects being implemented and policies reviewed to allow for seamless implementation,” she said.

The initiative reflects the university’s growing emphasis on accountability, execution and measurable institutional impact.
