The historic engagement between Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) and the family of its late founder, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, was officially set in motion by a powerful message of remembrance, shared values, and community development from the University’s highest governing body. Introducing the University’s executive delegation at the Ulundi, north of KwaZulu-Natal, on 29 May 2026, MUT Council Chair Dr Mosidi Makgae stated clearly that the Institution’s primary purpose for traveling to the historic seat of Ulundi was to formally acknowledge and honour the late Prince’s towering contribution to South African education.

Reiterating the core philosophy that defined Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi’s life and leadership, Dr Makgae reminded both delegations of his unshakeable conviction: that high-quality education remains the single most effective tool to liberate a Black child from the cycles of poverty. “We are here to share with you our values, our mission, and our upcoming programmes,” Dr Makgae stated warmly, framing the new ‘IGNITE 2030’ strategic framework not as a departure from the past, but as a modern continuation of the Founder’s original dream.

Dr Makgae further explained that the visit was an invitation to build a practical, forward-looking alliance. She noted that the University aims to explore tangible avenues where MUT and the Founder’s family can directly collaborate to drive socio-economic development and uplift local communities.

Expressing absolute confidence in the University’s current administrative transition, the Council Chair emphasized that the MUT Council remains deeply hopeful and secure under the strategic leadership of Interim Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Rushiella Songca. By aligning the governing council’s oversight with the active legacy of the Buthelezi family, the meeting has solidified a unified front dedicated to pushing MUT toward its global technology goals without losing its deep commitment to community transformation.
