‘Show us the results’: Buthelezi family cautiously welcomes MUT’s bold ‘IGNITE 2030’ Vision

HRH, Prince Zuzifa addressing the meeting at Ulundi before the two teams drove to KwaPhindangene

The family of the late Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi has given a measured yet deeply emotional response to the executive management of Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) following the historic visit to the iconic KwaPhindangene homestead in Ulundi. The visit took place on 29 May 2026.

While welcoming the University’s ambitious plans to transform the Institution over the next five years under its newly unveiled “IGNITE 2030” strategic framework, the Founder’s family cautioned that they now want to see concrete results from the academic and technological plans laid on the table. They would also like to see the University stabilised.

Responding directly to the presentations made by the MUT executive team, which included a four-fold student enrolment boom and a major artificial intelligence integration strategy, His Royal Highness Prince Zuzifa Buthelezi, the son of the Founder, maintained a pragmatic stance on behalf of the family. He emphasised that while the vision is commendable, the true test of the strategies will lie in their execution and measurable outcomes.

The Founder’s team expressed immense appreciation for the engagement, noting that this executive visit was the first of its kind in the history of the relationship between MUT and the family. The family noted that the late Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi would have been overjoyed by the management’s proactive stance.

The deep-seated connection between the Institution and its Founder was brought to life during an intimate tour of the historic KwaPhindangene household. Prince Zuzifa personally guided the MUT management team through the estate, which serves as a living archive of Prince Mangosuthu’s monumental life.

The emotional climax of the historic visit took place at the gravesite of the late statesman. In a touching moment of traditional protocol and remembrance, Prince Zuzifa addressed his late father directly.

Standing before the final resting place of the Prince of KwaPhindangene, Prince Zuzifa told his father that the MUT leadership team had travelled to the heart of Zululand specifically to pay homage to him, to honour his enduring legacy, and to formally recognise his foundational vision of developing and liberating the nation through the power of education. This was a reminder of the deeper bond between our Founder and his family.

The visit successfully bridges the gap between the University’s historical origins and its tech-driven future, establishing a transparent, results-focused partnership between the current custodians of the university and the legacy-bearers of its founder.
