Professor Rushiella Songca, the Interim Vice-Chancellor and Principal of Mangosuthu University of Technology, was invited as a keynote speaker at the Higher Education conference organised by the Higher Education Resource Services, South Africa (HERS-SA), a non-profit organisation dedicated to advancing women’s leadership and gender equity in higher education. The conference brought together influential voices in the sector, aspiring leaders, academics, and key sector stakeholders.
She delivered a stirring keynote address emphasising the importance of intentional leadership in a rapidly evolving educational landscape. Her insights inspired attendees to adopt proactive strategies and foster an environment of growth and equality within their institutions.
Under the theme “Women Leading Change Together,” Professor Songca implored delegates to move beyond waiting for leadership opportunities to arise organically. “In this era of digital transformation and artificial intelligence, higher education is navigating a tumultuous landscape,” Professor Songca highlighted, noting the urgency for new leadership styles underpinned by humanity, collaboration, and transformative ideals. “We need leaders who listen, build, and uplift others while relentlessly pursuing excellence.”
Throughout her address, she placed strong emphasis on intentionality, defining it as a crucial component of leadership development and long-term influence. “In the context of leadership, intentionality means being deliberate about who you are becoming, what you stand for, and the impact you wish to make,” she explained. “One of the most important dimensions of intentional leadership is understanding the value of networking,” she stated. “Behind many successful women are mentors, collaborators, sponsors, and networks that affirm their potential and help amplify their voice.”
Professor Songca further urged attendees to embrace their visibility in the sector and to actively seek out leadership opportunities. “Apply for fellowships, submit your academic articles, speak at conferences, chair meetings, lead projects, and publish your research. Take up space unapologetically,” she advised.
