MUT Unveils State-of-the-Art Student Dining, Edutainment, and Study Social Centre
Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) has officially opened its newly revamped Student Dining, Edutainment, and Study Social Centre. Located at the heart of the main campus, this flagship facility is designed to enrich student life beyond the lecture hall and completely reimagine the modern campus experience. The integrated facility brings three distinct student experiences under one roof. First it is the now contemporary dining hall, which has been turned into a modern, spacious space. Then a vibrant edutainment zone, which is a dedicated space for cultural expression, music, gaming, and student-led events. And lastly, a collaborative study area, with flexible learning configurations fully equipped with high-speed Wi-Fi and charging points.
Swazi Shabalala, speaking on behalf of the Vuvamu Project managers and engineering team, described the revamped facilities as “state-of-the-art,” noting that the space provides a holistic atmosphere specifically designed to help students manage their academic workloads.
The project is a part of the university’s grand plan to modernise its infrastructure so that it meets all the necessities of the students, staff and others who may want to use its facilities. For the students, the Centre will give them a dignified, and inspiring space to learn, connect, and unwind between classes.
According to Professor Twala, Interim Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Resources and Planning, the Centre also marks a key milestone in the rollout of the University’s newly minted Estates and Facilities Strategy 2026–2030. “This Centre is more than bricks and mortar; it is a statement of our commitment to holistic student wellbeing,” said Professor Twala. “When students eat well, study well, and find joy on campus, they thrive academically. This space honours their voice and affirms their place at the centre of everything we do.”
While celebrating the opening, MUT Executive Management issued a strong, unified appeal to the student body to protect and preserve the new facility. Interim Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Rushiella Songca, offered concise but constructive words for the student body: “Please look after the facility. Please brag about it on all the platforms,” Professor Songca said.
Echoing this sentiment, Professor Twala reminded students that the Centre is a shared asset that comes with shared responsibility. “We ask all students to treat the Centre as their own and to protect it from vandalism, graffiti, theft, and any misuse,” Professor Twala urged. “Every cracked tile, broken chair, or damaged appliance diverts scarce resources from bursaries, learning materials, and future student facilities. MUT calls on the SRC, residence leadership, and the broader student body to champion a culture of pride.” To accommodate student schedules and ensure maximum accessibility, the Centre will operate from 06:00 to 22:00 daily.
