MUT Radio and Library unite to celebrate World Book Day and promote “Knowledge Hub”

Zolile Machi

In celebration of World Book Day on 23 April 2026, the Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) Library Services department has reinforced its commitment to literacy and critical thinking through a dynamic partnership with MUT Radio. Zolile Manci, representing the MUT Library, took to the airwaves on the popular Vuk’ubangene Breakfast Show to discuss the “Knowledge Hub,” a specialised segment dedicated to fostering a culture of reading and intellectual curiosity across the campus.

The “Knowledge Hub” is more than just a radio segment; it is a collaborative space designed to deepen information literacy. According to Machi, the initiative acts as a wide-reaching book club that brings the Library Services’ resources to the ears of the University community. “For the past year, the Knowledge Hub has sought to offer stimulating conversations about interesting books, a critical exchange of information, and an avenue for aspirant writers and poets to attract an audience following,” Machi told listeners.

While libraries are traditionally viewed as quiet collections of physical books, Machi emphasised that the modern MUT Library is a vibrant, social engine for knowledge. By acquiring and organising diverse subject collections, the Library Services department has created public spaces where learning becomes a shared experience.

Key goals of the Knowledge Hub and Library partnership include promoting informed dialogue, with students encouraged to engage critically with the information they consume. Also, reading for pleasure; this is when the campus community is reminded that books are a source of enjoyment, not just academic study. These goals highlight that students and staff should continue reading books beyond exam preparation, assignments, and projects. The final key goal is to support local talent. This goal provides a platform for student poets and writers to showcase their work.

The collaboration between MUT Radio and the Library highlights a shared goal: providing educational, cultural, and technological platforms that facilitate social interaction. Together, the two divisions help the University community to sort, store, and disseminate the ideas of the modern era. “Through the acquisition and provision of book collections on different subjects, MUT Library creates public spaces for diverse users to access knowledge,” Machi concluded. “In this sense, learning becomes a truly social activity.”
